Overview
The following are the glues, paints and stains that I have successfully used in building the models I have built. This is a guide only as individual modellers have different preferences and ways of working.
Glues
I generally use two glues:
Evostick external PVA, sometimes with a dash of water, I like this for framing and the time element.
Soudal high viscosity superglue, I like this for structural areas, surface ironwork and when I can’t wait
Paints
My favourite paints are:
Selsil Spray Paint, available in multiple colours, they have been consistent due to the RAL numbers, easy to apply over a range of temperatures.
Matt Black, RAL 9005, for bogies, ironwork, handles
Anthracite Grey, RAL 7016, for wagon and carriage roofs
Carmine Red, RAL 3002, carriage sides
Leaf Green, RAL 6018, carriage sides
Sky Blue, RAL 5015, carriage sides
Light Ivory, RAL 1015, carriage window frames, Darjeeling carriage sides
Chocolate Brown, RAL 8017, Darjeeling carriage sides
Rust-Oleum Chalky Finish
Anthracite Grey, for wagons, sometimes it does raise the grain slightly which I like.
White emulation, lettering and bogie axle box covers.
PlastiKote
Red Oxide Primer, Slender Wagons
I do not use an undercoat and but like to apply multiple thin coats so as to show the wood grain and reduce runs. Internally I like to leave the carriage panelling natural.
Wood Stains
Ebony Black, undersides or ironwork
Mahogany, for chairs, benches and roof ribs
Dark Oak for floors, running boards and roof ribs.
Wax
Briwax, Medium Brown, used on Alpine Sides and Cattle Van MkII
